The week I went turkey hunting was April the 7-10, 2006. We set off to North Platte, Nebraska, on Friday April 7. When we were heading into Nebraska we stopped at the Bass Pro Shops. While we were there we got some ammo and face gear. When we arrived in North Platte it was about 3:30 to 4:00P.M. When we got there we met the people we were staying with and then we went to set up our Double Bull blinds. When we got to the place where we set our blind we saw turkeys. There were | about 4 to 5 big toms and a lot of hens and maybe 3 jakes. While we were watching them, Mackenzie saw 3 hens really close to us then they took off running in zigzags. When they left we partnered up and went to set the blinds up. Well it was Mackenzie, Mike, and I. Mackenzie and I were setting up our blind. We got it all set up except one side. I went in to push the side out while Mackenzie was on the outside pulling the side to get it out. My hair got caught and Mackenzie didn’t know so she was pulling while I was trying to get my hair out. Then I told Mackenzie to stop pulling and to help. She climbed in and was helping me and while this was happening mike was video taping us. When we got that one done we had to go help Teale set up his blind. The first blind took 5min. to set up and the second one took 2min.When we got every thing set up we put up some targets and we practiced shooting for a little while.
After passing our proficiency test, we headed to the house. When we got there the boys watched TV and the girls were playing with the owner’s pet rats. We ate dinner it was good. It was wild turkey which I had never eaten before. Then we went down stairs where we were staying and got our stuff ready for the week and got our clothes out for in the morning. Then we stayed up late and watched a movie. When the movie was over we went to bed.
We left the next morning at 6:00am. We were tired and sleepy, but we had to go hunting. I was so excited I couldn’t wait. When we got there we sat in our blinds, and sat and sat. We left at noon to go eat lunch and then went back till almost dark. We did the same thing that night.
The next morning we got up at 5:00am. We went out there sat there till noon, and then we went to eat. When we were done we went back and sat. Then I saw one hen and two jakes. I didn’t want the jakes because I wanted a big tom. Our decoys had bigger beards than the Jakes did.

The last day we went hunting. We got up, I have no idea what time it was but it was early. We got ready to go and we knew we were going to get something. When we got there, there were a few hens passing our blind so I grabbed the walky talky and told Mackenzie there are some turkeys. After that we saw nothing at all until we got back from lunch, then I saw this big tom, I got ready to shoot it and a cow chased it away. I was mad but at least I saw something. I told Mike we should shoot the cow but he said no. |
Well nothing shot, dead, or hanging over my shoulder, but that’s all right I had fun. The day we left, Mackenzie and I didn’t want to leave, we had a blast, but we had to go. We said goodbye and we set off back to Colorado. Before we left Nebraska we stopped at Cabela’s. This was the first time I had ever been in Cabela’s. What a neat store. We looked around and Mackenzie and I took photos of the animals. We took a photo of us in front of a bear. Then we went to see the bronze of two fighting elk outside of the store. We had a blast. That was our trip to North Platte Nebraska.
